- -=- About QU -=-
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Version 2.0 of QU is fully compatible with Tabby and dispenses with the
- scripts used by prior versions. To configure QU, just hold down the
- mouse button while you launch it. QU will work with Host 1.4, Host 2.0
- and probably other BBS applications. Unlike the built-in random quote
- reader in Host 2.0, QU can handle quotes longer than 255 characters.
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Would you like to have your callers see a fresh quote each day they call
- your Host BBS? QU can do it for you, even if you’re still running Host
- 1.4.
-
- The Quote Reader program, written by Frederic W. Barling and Otis
- Eversole, was designed to give Red Ryder Host boards a "Quote of the
- Day." The problem with Quote Reader, though, is that a caller had to
- specifically activate it to see the Quote of the Day. QU is a program
- designed to automatically create a Quote of the Day which can be seen by
- all of your callers, without any special effort on their part.
-
- Host 2.0 gives you a built-in Quote of the Day function, but it’s
- limited to quotes of 255 or fewer characters. QU has no such limitation.
-
- Many boards are now running Michael Connick’s BullGen program to give
- them a “This Day in History” message. This is nice, but gets a bit old
- when every board you call tells you that today is Lawrence Welk’s
- birthday. QU lets you use Quotes *you* select -- you don’t have to be
- one of the crowd.
-
- QU (pronounced “cue,” derived from “Quote Updater”) is a program which
- reads standard Quote Reader files (quotations usually delimited by %%)
- to create a text file containing a single quote. If you have QU name
- this text file as one of the Host System files -- System1.msg,
- System2.msg, System3.msg, Welcome or (on Host 2.0) Logoff.msg. -- you
- can configure your BBS so that a freshly-prepared quote can be seen by
- all callers. QU can be configured to select a quote randomly, by day of
- the month or by day of the year. QU can be run as a Command 50
- application -- it returns to Host when it has done its work -- or as a
- Tabby event. I have used QU to change the System3.msg and Logoff.msg
- messages on the Glassell Park BBS on a daily basis.
-
- OIder versions of QU read a script to regulate their actions. No more.
- The script has been replaced by a set of STR resources which you can
- reset or alter at any time by launching QU while holding down the mouse
- button.
-
- The dialog which appears when you hold down the mouse button offers the
- following options:
-
- ° Year | Choose one of these to determine whether QU shows a
- • Month <-- | different quote every day of the year, every day of
- ° Random | the month, or randomly selects a quote every day.
-
- ° Clear Date <-- Check this to clear the internal date stored in QU.
-
- ___ # of Quotes Used in Random mode only. Number of Quotes in file.
-
- ___ Quote Source File Name of file containing Quotes.
-
- ___ Quote Result File Name of file to create with Quote.
-
- ___ Next Launch Name of next application to launch.
-
-
- • Yes
- Print Title? Do you want to print a title over the quote?
- ° No
-
-
- ___ Title Title to print, if applicable.
-
- ___ Quote Delimiter Character(s) used as separators in Quote file.
-
-
- QU should be installed at the same level as Host.
-
- You can install QU so that it’s launched by Dungeons on its way back to
- Host. Dungeons launches QU, which then launches Host. QU is small and
- fast, so the delay is imperceptible unless you’re using QU in its Year
- mode and it’s time to find a new quote. Most of the time QU checks its
- STR resources, sees the current date and zips on to the next
- application. If it’s in Month or -- if the file is less than about 50
- entries -- Random mode, it finds a fresh quote quickly and the delay is
- barely noticeable. Year mode can take a long time, though.
-
- If you want to run QU in the Year mode, I suggest that you have Host 2.0
- launch QU as a FidoNet application, or in a chain of Tabby applications,
- during a low-traffic time period. QU is fully compatible with Tabby
- events.
-
- Since QU is relatively small, you can run multiple copies of QU if you
- want to change multiple Host textfiles.
-
- WARNING: QU has no error recovery, so carefully check your work before
- you run QU, and make sure your quote source file is in good repair. In
- particular, make sure that if QU is expecting 31 quotes in a file, there
- are at least 31 quotes there.
-
- QU was written in LightSpeed Pascal, and is the first useful program
- I’ve written in LSP. Since my previous compiling experience has been in
- “no program less than 33K” ZBasic, I’m still amazed by QU’s small size.
-
- I hope you find QU Quite Useful.
